A small win

During this past election, the Democrats made a very big gain in influence- with Republicans being stigmatized as being super anti-immigrant, they lost many of their seats.

Even though many of the Democrats were still anti-immigration, many were pro, and not as nasty about the culture "contaminating" ours... which is a plethora of other traditions anyways. Just thought I'd make the note. There is a little itty bitty small bit of hope, and thats all I ask.

As President Bush signed the bill for the final okay to build the wall between the US and Mexico, people are already starting to feel the effects that it has on the economy. Earlier this year the apple and pear farmers were feeling the burn as they couldn't find enough workers to pick them. Florida, where so much of our produce come from, is going to suffer the most at the lack of hands. That state is wellknown for being nonfriendly to immigrants- so why should they stay there? Hello strawberry hike (which will directly effect my job at Amy's Ice Creams), hello tomato hike (once again how am I supposed to make my Mexican food without tomatoes!!!!!)!

So I have to be really lame here excuse me:

So the first ignorant small town in Texas has started the trend- one I hope will not continue. They have officially made it illegal to rent or hire illegal immigrants. They DO realize that Hispanics make up sooooo much of Texas right?

How sad is it that people are freaked out at a nation that will one day be brown? Is it really that bad? Is it really that scary? It can't be stopped.

I hope their economy fails. And they all have to move to "the Valley".

Apparently care more than alot of people. I was completely blown away by the effort and dedication of a little boy named Saul who is going to Mexico on behalf of his mother to help her gain citizenship in America. Mind you, the boy is 7.

I don't know, this story is just so inspirational to me. At least they are putting a face to the suffering involved with the immigrants here. Its about time. I wish it would get more press.

Even some republicans understand.

Apparently even the governor of California understands the need for immigrant labor. The fields of fruit are dying. Diplomacy must be made- how is it that so many of the states the wall is built upon don't even want it there? Doesn't that say something? Apparently the Governator has appealed to the Hispanic vote
Somehow... who knows...

But either way. They need workers. Badly.

Alas, the eve of Voting Day has arrived and several issues have come up. It seems as though the many many motivated people previously marching for illegal immigrant rights have failed to come through when it mattered the most- the polls.

I am registered to vote and plan to be in line tomorrow afternoon. What is stopping all the people who wanted to help from voting? I participated in the May protest. There were a few thousand. I guess most were ineligible to vote. How is it that there are more Hispanics than African Americans now and out voice is lost?

Well Bush did it- he authorized the wall. Now we really aren't any better than China or Germany. Talk about history repeating itself. The story that I am going to link definitely hits the question I have been asking throughout this entire ordeal...

WHO IS GOING TO BUILD IT?

Well, obviously illegal immigrants aren't. Well, come on- all the people that have been claiming that they have been taking their jobs- yes thousands of you are needed- please build it, because if you do, we know its not going to be cheap. Are there even that many people with the experience to take on such a feat?

Jim Gilchrist went to the University of Columbia recently to talk about the Minutemen project with fellow students- brought on by the COlumbia College Republicans- and it turned out to be a horrid horrid occurance. For a movement fought peacefully (the pro-immigration people), the Minutemen reacted badly.

This is a small sample of the radio broadcast found on Jim Gilchrist and a fellow Columbia student.

And here is the coverage offered by Univision that covered the event- Univision I and Univision II

Notice the difference in the coverage.... in the Univision coverage, the protesters were the ones attacked- especially covering the Minuteman that kicked the student in the face... Yet Fox, looks at the protesters as rioters and they don't even really focus on the fact that the Minuteman kicked the student.

The main reason my grandmother came to the U.S. was to provide a life for her future family. Thats what alot of people come over for, a hope that one day their families will be able to climb the social ladder and this is what happened. My father is a lawyer- couldn't get better than that. She did all she could do to provide. In this article, it talks about what the amnesty act did for all people and what many wish to accomplish.

Homeless?

I was running through google news and came across this disturbing news piece. Apparently in Escondido, CA they passed a city ordinance to make it illegal to rent to illegal immigrants. I think the funny thing is that they say they are not going against Mexicans, but how can you say that when they comprise 42% of the city's population? That won't solve anything. All that will do is put people out on the street. Their homeless population is about to boom.

On top of that, the most annoying quote out of the entire piece was by Claudia Spencer, "One by one, American cities are going to be doing the same,and one by one, Americans are going to be getting their cities back."
Get their cities back from who?
The people that do the "unmentionable" work in their cities?
The brown people?

They have become part of the fabric of that city, getting rid of that many people will hurt the ecomoy and create a nomadic nation. We saw what happened this year with the lack of people picking pears and apples.

The Great Wall of Mexico?

I know many of you have heard of the proposed wall that will be going through the southern border of the United States. I was wondering if anyone viewed this as being blatently racist? If they are going to try and keep brown people out, why don't they build a 700 mile wall between us and Canada? I think its funny that people take for granted how much undocumented and documented work illegal immigrants do in the US. The fact that politcal figures can be chastised for hiring an illegal immigrant is stupid. Well, rather, they should do something about it if they want to continue having these people in their service. There has been a huge increase in "Immigrant Roundups" around the US and for some cities, might actually hurt them economically. Its so sad that they can't accept that some people really do want better lives. Here is an excerpt from the Chronicle this week.

Why I care.

So I've decided to go ahead and choose to discuss the Mexican immigration issue that has been debated recently. This has a direct relation to my life because my grandparents were illegal at one time. Without their sacrafice and vigilance, my family would not be where we are today.

My father is an accomplished lawyer and my mother is a teacher. They accomplished what their parents could only dream of and I am in college to continue it.

I am a 5th year senior (6th year technically because I took a year and a half off), and am working towards my degree. My parents didn't have the money to send me to college, so I am paving my own way like they had to when they were here. I am hoping through my hardwork I can make my abuelita proud. She is so happy that my sister and I are attending that she saved for a year to give my sister and I some money for books. We have 20 other cousins who have accomplished nothing, and we were the only ones to get her blessing.
